15 Ways to Improve Motivation in Your Business Today - By Howard Shore
People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well,
neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it
daily. Zig Ziglar. In today’s
business
environment, it is essential that we find ways to
make our organizational resources more productive.
In many organizations, the most prominent
and expensive resource we have is our people. As a
result a lot of time is spent on creating processes
and conditions that drive and motive our employees.
Over the years, I have noticed leaders trying
many ways to motivate their people to higher levels
of performance. Even the best leaders have
experienced the frustration of leading someone who
seemed to refuse to live up to expectations.
Ironically, their people were probably feeling
the same way. The reason, motivation develops
internally from a personal desire to achieve goals
that are important, both to the individual and to the
organization. Motivation is the force that
prompts you to take action. If you are having
trouble getting someone to achieve your goals you
are probably failing to understand what theirs are.

Coach Collaborative Improvement |
|
Use the acronym COACH to help you
remember some
of the most important
coaching behaviors:
• Collaborate.
Work with team members to identify performance
problems, set standards and
performance objectives, and develop a plan for
improved performance. Remember:
All good coaches think in terms of how "we" can
solve the problem.
• Own.
Examine your personal behavior, and accept some of
the responsibility for the
problem. Before you discuss the problem with your
team member, ask yourself:
"Did I make my expectations clear?" "Did I provide the
proper training?" "Does the
team member have the appropriate tools to do the
job?"

One-Minute Idea |
|
Avoid the word “but” when dealing with
employees
If you eliminate the word "but" from your memos, e-
mail, phone conversations, and dealings with
employees, you will strengthen your ability to
persuade others. Why? Any time you use the
word "but," what you are really saying is that you
disagree with that person. For example, if you say "I
agree with you, but let me say this," employees
will
wonder if you really agree with them or not. The
solution is to always replace "but" with "and." In the
above example, you would say: "I agree with you,
and let me say this." Replacing "but" with "and"
eliminates all contradictions from your message, and
makes what you say more powerful. Motivational

Statistics |

What are your employees doing with 40% of their
time?
A study by the University of Michigan found that 100
percent of the
tasks allotted to employees typically could be
performed in only 60 percent of the work week. That
leaves 40 percent of their time to be used at their
discretion. Journal of Business Strategy
